RAMIE SPENT THE remainder of the weekend attempting to put together her next lesson and moping around the small house that was serving as her temporary home. Emma was never out of her thoughts, nor the too-brief kiss they’d shared. She would do anything to be with Emma again, feel the desire, the tenderness as Emma’s lips pressed against hers. She needed to see Emma and make her understand how much she meant to her. Surely she could make her understand.
She mentally imagined herself entering Emma’s office, locking the door behind her, marching behind her desk, and smothering her with a hungry kiss before leaning her back onto the desk and revealing her deepest feelings. Well, maybe not that far, Ramie thought with a smile, but as close as she could get to expressing her feelings.
At the end of her final class, Ramie strode resolutely to Donlevy Hall and climbed the stairs to the third floor. She stopped in front of Emma’s office and stood for a moment to catch her breath, then knocked. Receiving no answer, she tried the doorknob to make sure before turning to make her way back the direction she’d come. Perhaps Emma was gone for her regular coffee break with Howard at the Student Union. She glanced into several open offices on her way toward the staircase. Looking into the next to last office, she spotted Howard searching through a file cabinet behind his desk and stopped.
She leaned against the door frame and smiled. “Where’s your partner in crime today, Dr. Trammel?”
Howard glanced over his shoulder and smiled when he saw Ramie. “It would seem I’ve been abandoned, my dear girl.”
“Too much partying?” she asked as she pushed away from the door and stepped inside the office.
“Please have a seat, if you can find one. I’m devoting today to the filing I’ve obviously neglected for far too long,” he said as he sat behind his cluttered desk. “I’ve only been at it for an hour or so, but am grateful for the interruption. How can I help you?”
“I thought while I had a little free time I’d drop by to thank Dr. Rothenberg for inviting me to the party Saturday. Obviously I’ve missed her.”
“She developed a frightful headache late Saturday and called me Sunday to say she was going out of town for a few days. Needed to get away even though we’ll have a break before too long.”
“Then I’ll try to catch her after she returns. It’s nothing urgent.”
“She’ll be sorry she missed you.”
